I have been involved in one aspect or another of Actuarial Education since 1960. This long exposure has provided an excellent knowledge of the Society’s objectives, methods and problems.

I began giving seminars in the Fall of 1972 to students who could attend sessions weekly. These sessions concentrated on providing an incentive for early and constant study, testing, and answering questions on difficult parts of the material.

In the Fall of 1982, the audience was broadened and changes were made. The seminars attempted to cover all of the material in a short period - typically 3 to 6 days.. To maximise the benefit, the seminars were held 2 to 3 weeks before the examination. They emphasised identifying areae of weakness and explaining a limited number of difficult topics. This meant that people were assumed to have covered the material twice before attending and those who had not were left behind.

By 2002, the market had changed. People no longer wanted a seminar close to the exam to clarify a limited number of areae and to identify areae of weakness but rather wanted a seminar much earlier which introduced them to the material, teach common problem areae, and provide a framework for further study. In response I converted in 2003 to a different format.

       The major changes are:
       a) The seminars are held much earlier - typically 5 to 6 weeks before the examination.
       b) Provide a reasonably complete set of notes, either in the course or via ACTEX.
       c) Review all of the material.
       d) Teach the major concepts, with emphasis on those that typically present problems.
       e) Emphasise numerical problems.
       f) Assume the participant has covered the material once.

My practical experience is varied. Initially, it was in the field of computer systems in the individual and group areae for a large insurer operating in both Canada and the US. From there, I moved to be taxation officer and then to head both the Statement and Valuation Departments. Subsequently, I served as the appointed actuary for a smaller insurer. For nearly 30 years I served on various industry committees concerned with disability insurance - both individual and group.

In recent years, I have been involved in the employee benefit programmes of local universities and as an expert witness - in group insurance, pensions and wrongful death.

I look forward to sharing my experience with you!!!
